Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

DBT is based on the premise that we must learn to accept painful events in our lives that cannot be changed while working to change what we can to build a life worth living.

Some people naturally have a more heightened emotional response system but are never taught how to manage it.  When high emotions are met with traumatic or invalidating environments, life becomes painful.  Learning to manage intense emotions while having a more fulfilling life is what DBT is all about.

DBT incorporates acceptance and change through a broad range of practical skills to achieve meaningful behavior change.

*I offer DBT-informed treatment; if you are experiencing active suicidal ideation, self-harm, or other risky behaviors, a comprehensive DBT program may better suit your needs.  Referrals can be provided.

The four main components of DBT

Mindfulness

Living in the present moment without judgement

Distress Tolerance

Tolerating big, painful feelings without making the problem worse

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Learning how to develop and maintain respectful, supportive relationships

Emotion Regulation

Learning how to identify and change depression, anxiety, anger, guilt and shame

Prolonged Exposure (PE)

PE is for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

The majority of adults will experience at least one major traumatic event in their lifetime and most will naturally recover without treatment.  However, a portion of people will develop symptoms of PTSD that interfere with day-to-day life and are unlikely to go away on their own.

PE is a frontline treatment for reducing PTSD symptoms and improving one’s quality of life by confronting traumatic memories in real time and stopping avoidant behaviors.  Most people who respond well to PE see a reduction in symptoms within 12-16 weeks.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a targeted treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Unlike what we often see in the media, OCD is more than just washing your hands too much or wanting things to be neat and orderly.  OCD is comprised of obsessive thoughts that people fear will become true if they don’t mitigate it by doing a ritual to neutralize the thought.

Many of the OCD symptoms people experience are mental compulsions that are not obvious to others, which keeps people suffering much longer.  I can offer screening for OCD and provide treatment options if indicated.
